PEYOTE MOON Band with Roots in Avalon Park making a Name for themselves
“Peyote Moon” is a local East Orlando trio with Avalon roots….. all three of its members worked and met in Avalon Park. They started as part of company band, and then began signing and performing as a trio. They’re first performances were in Avalon Park restaurants, cafes and at the Avalon Park band shell.
They released their first CD of 13 original songs this month and it’s available on iTunes, Spotify, Google Play and other online venues. Just look for “Peyote Moon” and you’ll see their CD cover photo (as shown here). They were recently filmed and will appear on a local TV show on Orange TV (to be broadcast in May) performing eight of their original songs.
The 13 original songs were written and composed by founding member, Phil Davis, who brought together Lakshmi Ramaseshan and Rusty Phillips because he felt the combination of their three voices could create a vocal sound that would bring the songs to life as he imagined them. For the last 4 years now they have practiced weekly and performed monthly around the Orlando area. They currently have a standing monthly gig at Maxine’s on Shine in downtown Orlando (the fourth Sunday of every month).
They are currently well into the recording of their second CD which features 15 new original songs, many of these songs are ones they have performed for the last year. Their second CD is titled “Running with Ghosts” and includes some of the band’s favorite numbers.
The band’s name comes from one of their original songs “Peyote Moon”… a fictitious place somewhere in the southwest. The song was inspired by Phil’s many trips to the Navajo Nation.
The focus of their sound is their vocals and harmonies….. “a little bit country, a little bit rock n’ roll, a little bit pop” is how they describe it. It’s feel good music, but that doesn’t mean it’s not without soul or depth. “Peyote Moon” weaves its own web of emotion and feeling. Don’t let the sweet sound deceive you… there’s a wide emotional pallet here.
Instrumental in the recording of their CD was Scott Davis, who did the engineering, mixing and mastering at Sailforth Productions…. as well playing bass guitar and drums on some tracks, and Glenn Davis, who played drums on a few tracks. It’s a Davis family project….. Scott is Phil’s son, and Glenn is Phil’s brother.
Peyote Moon will be having a CD Release Party on May 3rd (Saturday) from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Mellow Mushroom on E. Colonial and Alafaya Trail. They would love you support in helping promote their music.
You can follow them on Facebook: https://facebook.com/peyotemoontrio
Their website will be up shortly. And look for them on iTunes, Spotify and Google Play! |

Parents on the Sideline... Please Don't... Written by Linda Bilyeu
Youth Sporting Events are not the Olympics...
In the past few years of attending my granddaughter's sporting events, I've taken notice of a few do's and don'ts that parents and grandparents will find helpful.
I'm a spectator who tends to multi-tasks. Which means I can fully focus on the game and also pay attention to what's going on around me while taking mental notes.
The mental notes that I have accumulated over time are now being put to use to guide you with some basic rules.
Please do not take offense to my list of do's and don'ts unless you might possibly be guilty as charged. Then hopefully you will learn a lesson as to what the basic rules should be, based on my opinion.
Do's and Don'ts of Youth Sports Games for Parents
- These do's and don'ts apply to a minor amount of team supporters. The majority of parents deserve a huge kudos for taking the time to have their children participate in youth sports. Kids aren't as active as they were years ago. With tech gadgets that occupy their time while sitting down they aren't getting outdoors as much as they should.
- While outdoors they are riding on motorized scooters, bikes or go-karts and they are not getting the cardio workout they should. What happened to the old fashioned way of pedaling a bike or using their feet to maneuver their scooters of skateboards? It's a shame. Kids are being allowed to be lazy.
- Participating in an athletic sport teaches the kids that being active is good for their health. Being lazy is not beneficial. Being a member of a team teaches a child they could overcome fears and gain drive, determination and motivation. It's all about the "team." Teamwork.
- Now it's up to the parents to follow some basic rules and set a good example.
- Go Team!
Things parents shouldn't do at their kids sports game...
- Do not bring your kids late to the game. There is a certain time scheduled per team. Try your best to stick to the schedule, no one likes to have to forfeit a game due to a member shortage.
- Be sure and feed your child at least an hour before the game. If they eat too soon before the game, their breakfast or lunch might be ejected forward and create a mess.
- Make sure the kids take a tinkle before they join the team. The only dribbling on the court should be from the ball. It's quite funny to watch the kids squeezing their legs closed as they attempt to make a shot, but why risk an accident?
- Your schedule is tight. You have a to-do list a mile long...but, they need their practice. Its their time to learn. Try your best to bring them to practice.
- I don't have to remind you how essential drinking water is during their breaks. Not soft drinks. Not sugary drinks. Water is best. Be sure and bring a bottle or two, to practice and the game.
- In the beginning of the season the Team Mom should distribute a list with the date that you should bring the snacks. Try your best not to forget the snacks. If you aren't going to be able to attend that specific game, place someone else in charge of bringing the food and drink. The kids always look forward to their chill time after the game, with their team mates, while enjoying their treats. The choice of food is up to you. Be creative.
- Team jerseys should be odor, stain and wrinkle free. Your child is representing their team. Just before the game you realize you forgot the jersey in the car trunk all week...in just a few minutes you could blot out a stain and toss it in the dryer with a fabric softener, for a couple of minutes. Preferably a fragrance free fabric softener...can't imagine your youngen running around smelling like Spring Breeze.
- If your daughter has long hair be considerate and place her hair in a pony tail. Not pig tails, I've witnessed other kids get smacked in the face with pig tails swinging around the field or court.
- If your superstar player has younger siblings do not allow them to run around the game area. I've seen tiny toddlers get flattened during games and even though they weren't injured their screams could be heard around the field.
- Cheer On Your Child's Team...
More Basic Rules for Parents During Youth Sports Games
- Spectators shouldn't gossip. You never know who is seated around you. Even if your gossip is harmless, some one could misinterpret what you said and your words could hurt some one's feelings. Parents should not say something inappropiate or rude about a player on the team. Remember, you are at your child's game and the last thing you need is a to find yourself in time out or possibly blocked.
- Do cheer on the opposing team. Remember, these are children at play. Your cheers will show not only show your children, but the other teams parents and players that you all are in this game together.
- Don't yell at your kid during the game if they temporarily zone out. It happens. They are kids. I've seen kids zone out for a few minutes and you would think the parents were about to slam dunk them. Your child will snap out of it and rejoin the game.
- Do not yell at other parents. If some one is blocking your view, kindly let them know. Chances are they are in their zone and don't realize it. Don't yell at another parent because their kid didn't make the shot. Seriously? This is a youth game, not the Olympics!
- Remember to double knot their shoes. It's unbelievable how many times I saw kid's shoelaces become untied during a game. They are already in the process of losing their baby teeth, they don't need to be falling flat on their face and losing them during a game with their peers.
- Do not spend the short time at a game on your mobile device. Put your phone away and concentrate on the cheering on your child and their team mates. You could very possibly miss the play of the game because you were playing Candy Crush. Show your support and CHEER.
- Do not question the coaches instructions or actions. He's taking the time to coach your kid's team because he knows how the game should be played. He's a volunteer. He receives no compensation for teaching your child the rules and regulations of the sport. He should be applauded for the time that he spends training your child to be part of a team. Now, you could suggest to the coach that he chills out a bit if you feel he's being too tough on a child. I have never witnessed this, but any thing is possible. Always remember to thank your coach.
- Do give the kids some slack if they seem tired. Between school, homework and lack of sleep they might not be up to par during a practice or game. That's OK. Now on the flip side if they are just not in the mood, remind them what teamwork is all about. Being there for your team, even if you aren't in the mood.
- Practice makes perfect. When time allows for you practice your child's sport with them in between seasons or during the season. Make it a family outing. During this time remind your child that it's not OK to hog a ball during a game. Team members share the ball and are not playing the game solo. Without team mates there would be no team. Sharing is caring.
- Give your children compliments, a high five, a fist bump, a hug...share with them why you are so proud of them and how impressed you are with their sportsmanship. Children need encouragement, adults do also. Who doesn't like to be recognized when they accomplish some thing that's important to them? Go ahead and spread the love and watch your child shine! Go Team!
- Teamwork Involves the Entire Team

The Case for "UPTOWN AVALON" Avalon Park Blvd and East Colonial, the new development and area should be referred to as Uptown Avalon Written by Publishing@apgazette.com
Don't we already have an Uptown Avalon Park?
Tou·ché! We do have wonderfully built luxury townhomes in Avalon Park situated adjacent to Town Park located, in what most of us call, Down Town Avalon Park, however it is in down town AP, but Up town Down Town. If that makes any sense. ( side bar: There are only a few homes left, so if you are interested visit the Remax in Avalon Park).
Making the Case
Here are the facts. Although many, Avalon Park Residents, distinctly separate their community from other surrounding neighborhoods down Avalon Park Blvd, most of our neighbors have no clue that they do not live in Avalon Park.
"Oh, no Darling, you don't live in Avalon Park, you live in Avalon Lakes..."
Any Realtor can tell you that the majority of residents living down Avalon Park Blvd say they live in Avalon Park. And most Realtors can also tell you that the majority of buyers who are familiar with the area considers any neighborhood on Avalon Park Blvd as Avalon Park. Why is that, um maybe, because the main road is called Avalon Park Blvd, the proximity to Avalon Park, and the association and familiarization used as talking points about the community are all factors that play into this perception and belief.
There was a drive a couple years ago to make Avalon Park, it's own city and the surrounding neighborhoods were proposed to be a part of that city, so although many would like to believe Avalon Park ends at the roundabout and the intersection of Alafaya & APB, the reality is that our community extends beyond those parameters. We have neighbors who live in AP and own local businesses down Avalon Park Blvd, and residents who live in surrounding neighborhoods who directly contribute to our local economy daily, so when we say Avalon Park Community, it has a broader meaning then that of Avalon Park Neighborhood which many of us dutifully pay our quarterly HOA payment to.
I say we should embrace the reality in front of us and capitalize on it while building a broader sense of community. Staying in our bubble and telling ourselves that "the neighborhood down the street from us is not in our community" will only leave us with very little influence to help encourage more development that can help beautify the area. A rise in property values down the street equates to a higher rise in Avalon Park.
So What is being proposed here?
As many of you have seen, the new WAWA, Aldi, Wendy's, Dunkin Dounuts, and several others shops are coming to the area. It's situated "UP" Avalon Park Blvd about 3.5 miles from "Down Town." Get where I am going with this?
The shopping plaza is currently being named, Avalon Commons, but I propose that it is renamed Uptown Avalon, not Uptown Avalon Park, but simply Uptown Avalon. In fact, this entire area, including Grandeville Luxury Aparments, should be considered/ perceived as Uptown Avalon. When Grandeville first was being developed several years ago, they called themselves Grandeville in Avalon Park, but was challenged and had to change their name to Grandeville on Avalon Park, but now, as our community has matured and the upswing potential of building a stronger brand for our community which can yield more commerce, a rise in property values, and a beautification of the area which will attract more developers. For the thousands of drivers that pass this intersection daily, the consideration will now be, If there is an Uptown Avalon, where is Down town? Uptown Avalon seem to be an eventual fit for the area, but who knows!
Of course, there is cons.... there are always cons!
1. More commerce, may lead to more traffic 2. As in the past, news reports associated any crime occurring up Avalon Park blvd as Avalon Park although it was wrong, it will become fact. Our community understanding will certainly grow which is already the case in some of our groups on Facebook. 3. It will certainly promote community with other surrounding neighborhoods which may be a challenge
In Conclusion...
Should Uptown Avalon become a reality, a vision of more shopping, fine dining, and AP style housing in the area will help promote safer neighborhoods and help bring up an area that has been struggling for years.

Hey, Your Fly Is Open But more importantly, your door is unlocked
by Dennis Horazak, Neighborly Reporter
Guys, we’ve all been there. At one time or another almost very one of us either told someone else, or was told by someone else, that a zipper was left unzipped. A lot of women do the same thing when another woman’s dress tag is out or some other wardrobe piece is malfunctioning.
Gentle notification is a courteous thing to do, a low-cost way of paying it forward. So let’s talk about burglary. (Stay with me here.) There have been a lot of thefts from unlocked vehicles in the greater Orlando area, including Waterford Lakes, Avalon Park, and beyond. Last month the sheriff’s office parked an electronic sign at the island tip of Woodbury and Lake Underhill warning us “Lock Your Vehicle.” Now the sign has been moved to another location but the problem is still here – unlocked vehicles and garages.
Last year one of our neighbors complained that someone stole her credit-card-filled wallet and designer purse out of her unlocked car, and another complained that someone walked into his open garage in the middle of the night and stole his air compressor. I’ve talked to people in five other neighborhoods and they all have similar stories about their neighbors’ losses -- losses that could have been prevented by using common sense and protecting their valuables. |

UCF Republicans & Democrats Work together to Transform Bithlo Retrieved from East Orlando Post By Anna Vishkaee Eskimani
April 15th marked the last day of Project Bithlo’s first Civic Engagement Series, a collection of four interactive teach-ins designed to provide Bithlo’s Orange County Academy (OCA) students with an opportunity to learn more about their community and build relationships with college mentors.
The program was a first of it’s kind for Project Bithlo—a nonpartisan initiative launched by the UCF College Democrats and Republicans last year. “We love working with OCA students, and have a strong passion for civic engagement,” said the organization’s Chair and UCF grad student, Anna V. Eskamani. “Putting the two together in a series of interactive teach-ins made sense, and it gave us the opportunity to empower our Bithlo students and motivate them to get more involved in the political process.”
These four teach-ins, each an hour-and-half long, were spaced over the entirety of the spring semester, and focused specifically on the three branches of government. Each lesson plan was designed for OCA’s 4th-9th grade students, and was made possible with input of local educators.
But it was the UCF students who pulled it all off.
“The education sessions were dynamic,” said Tim McKinney, COO of United Global Outreach, the nonprofit leading the transformative work in Bithlo. “The UCF students would mix academia with role playing, creating an organic space for our students to ask questions and learn more. Knowledge is power, and when our students understand the structure of government more clearly, they’ll be more likely to get involved.”
Though this was Project Bithlo’s first Civic Engagement Series, it was not their first event. The UCF College Democrats and College Republicans have been working together through Project Bithlo since Fall 2013, and hosted a day of service last year that saw over 50 UCF students and faculty volunteer at Bithlo’s Transformation Village for a major beautification project. Earlier this semester, the group hosted UCF Day— an event that brought 33 OCA students to UCF’s main campus for a personalized look at future with college.
For Eskamani, this work is more than just teaching students about civics. It’s about building relationships, and bringing together groups that have traditionally not worked together before: “We are building a community in Central Florida that not only cares about supporting the transformation of Bithlo, but one that is also willing to look beyond party lines to pursue a like-minded cause. Congress may be at a standstill along partisan lines, but we are not.”
Project Bithlo plans to launch another series of civic engagement classes in the fall semester, this time with a focus on electoral work.
Now a graduate student at UCF pursuing master’s degrees in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management, Anna works full-time at Planned Parenthood of Greater Orlando as their External Affairs Manager. She continues to be involved with many advocacy groups, including United Global Outreach through her work in the community of Bithlo. She is also a board member of several organizations, including the Orange County League of Women Voters, Orange County Democratic Executive Committee, and the UCF Women's Studies Advisory Council. A lifelong feminist, Anna is excited to find even more ways to empower others and give back to her community. - See more at:http://www.eastorlandopost.com/ucf-republicans-democrats-work-together-transform-bithlo#sthash.1USWKXfb.dpuf |
